Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This form of the very restricted Gowan Cypress grows to only 3' on the barren soil of the Mendocino California coastline; under better conditions it grows to 40-60' with exfoliating bark and plumose citronella scented foliage S/D/GDr
From the high barren region on the coast of Mendocino county, this species is distinguished from its close relative, C. goveniana, by its thin black seeds. The species name is a bit of a misnomer in that these plants will only be pygmies in very poor soil; otherwise they should eventually grow to over 50 feet high. Full sun and well-drained soil. Drought tolerant once established. Frost hardy to 10 °F, USDA zone 8.
