Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Desert Olive is a deciduous shrub to tree that grows to 5'-10' tall and 4'-5' wide, often forms thickets in moister areas of otherwise dry environments, frequently mixing with oaks. These plants have an erect development. In the lower part they usually show a bare stem, while towards the top they widen to form the crown. The bark is light gray and smooth. Its dense leafy habit and drought tolerance can make this plant a great screen in a dry location. The blue-black fruits are often abundant, very noticeable, and eaten by many critters. Native to California and is also found outside of California, but is confined to western North America. Birds love the berries. Early flowering period provides nectar for early spring butterflies, particularly small butterflies such as hairstreaks. No Historical Uses found. Found in open woodlands, brushy areas, and near streams. Communitites located in Creosote Bush Scrub, Chaparral, Coastal Sage Scrub, Foothill Woodland Between 0 and 6,700 feet.
