What a great delight for very early Spring. Creamy white, frilly flowers festooned with fine chocolate speckles. After the flowers set seed the plant is adorned with pendulous red berries. Plants are 12-18" tall and prefer average to moist woodland conditions.
Spotted Mandarin. This former Disporum is found from Michigan down into Georgia and has been a nice addition to our shade garden montage. The flowers are worth a close look and beg for macro photography as they are finely spotted to which the specific epithet maculata refers.
Prosartes maculata (syn. Disporum maculatum) is an eastern North American forest denizen with branching stems of rounded to lance-shaped leaves. The stem tips hold downward-facing, star-like flowers with narrow, white, pointed petals with purple spots. In time plants will form an attractive clump. Straw coloured berries form in summer.
