Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Lagerstoemia Barista 'Like a Latte' is a dense, small shrub with semi-glossy green foliage with burgundy veining and infusion and late season pure white flowers. This selection has a petite habit with branced, woody stems. New foliage emerges coppery red with a gloss finish that matches the stems. Lagerstroemia are classic shrubs and trees of the US southeast. The Barista Collection of crape myrtles are hardy cultivars to zone 6. Where they have been tested in Michigan they die back to the ground in winter and bloom on new wood in late summer. On the west coast they will not die back but they will need to be planted in a hot spot to bring them into flower.
Whenever we visited points south and came across Crape Myrtles, we would sigh, knowing our winter climate just would be too much. Then we heard about these dwarf shrubby hybrids from Walters Gardens, bred to be hardy in zone 6-9. This selection, 'Like a Latte', has white flowers which open from coppery red buds, and dark purple foliage. Grows only to 2' tall and 3' wide. We recommend spring planting in the northern limits of its hardiness range.
