Beni kosode is a new maple for us in the same category as Shindeshojo, Beni maiko and Corallinum – bright pink or pink/red new growth – most change to green leaves in the summer and end with a fiery red finish in the fall. But not Beni kosode. If grown in light shade the pretty color can last through summer. Beni kosode is a small shrub-like maple with a bushy canopy. Five-lobed spring leaves are a bright pink-red. Prefers partial shade in well-drained soil. This dwarf may reach 3′ tall and wide in 10 years. Once established Beni kosode is hardy to zero degrees – USDA Climate Zone 7. Very limited availability. Care should be taken to protect this maple from hard freezes or wild swings in temperature. A nice container would be the correct choice for this cutie which would allow Beni to be moved into an unheated garage or shop for the winter.
