Golden Day's' Forsythia is a particularly brightly colored variety that produces intense yellow flowers in late winter and early spring. These form medium sized shrubs and with regular pruning can bloom so densely that the the plant is solid yellow. Forsythia is a staple in many landscapes because it requires so little care and thrives under so many conditions. Plants are very cold tolerant but will also thrive in areas with hot summers, even with only infrequent summer irrigation. However, plants flower much stronger if they receive water at least every other week during dry spells.
The summer foliage is a very dark green and is rarely bothered by deer. The dense branching habit lends this variety for use in producing solid hedges and screens, especially because plants establish very quickly. A one gallon plant can grow to a full height of seven or eight feet in their first year even if they are pruned that winter. You can prune these plants to only about a foot tall to rejuvenate an old clump, but these flower on old wood so heavy pruning is best done in late spring so as not to affect the flowers for next spring.
