Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Unlike most members of the Fargesia genus, Fargesia rufa 'Dracocephala' can handle direct sun during most of the day, although it still requires some shade in areas where 90-100 degrees is common for the summer. It is one of the fastest growing in the genus and can achieve its maximum height in only a few years, especially when given ample water. The dense foliage is excellent for hedges and screens, with even thin hedges creating an impenetrable barrier.

'Dracocephala' is similar to Fargesia nitida in habit, however 'Dracocephala' is slightly more upright and makes a wider clump. The shoots emerge early in the spring, often before any other species here in Southern Oregon. Unusual for most members of the Fargesia genus, the new shoots leaf out completely in the spring rather than late in the fall or even the following summer.
Feed your Panda and feed your soul. A mature clump of Dragon's Head Bamboo is spectacular. This one can tolerate a modest amount of morning sun! Though slow to get started, it can reach 10-16'.
