Nursery contributed plant descriptions
Chimonobambusa marmorea is the last bamboo to produce shoots each season, usually as late as October. The new shoots have a marbled appearance (hence the common name 'Marbled Bamboo') between creamy white and vibrant purple. This is one of our favorite bamboos for growing in containers or indoors. In loose soils, Chimonobambusa marmorea can spread quite rapidly, but the rhizomes are shallow and make for easier control.
Although the existing canes are hardy to around 0°F, the new shoots will often be damaged at around 15°F. At our nursery, where winter temperatures are consistently cold enough to damage the new shoots, a second set of shoots appears in early spring to replace those that were damaged by the cold.
