Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Crimson Brocade' has deep red flowers and is a daisy-style Aster with upright growth, colorful flowers, and strong stems. When planted in good soil, this variety will form a dense border of foliage and flowers. However, we have also grown this very successfully in heavy clay soil. Plants die to the ground in the winter and re sprout each spring from the roots. It can be divided in early spring before the roots produce shoots or by taking cuttings of the stems in mid spring after they have grown to about five inches in height.
At our nursery, this plant has proven to be very deer resistant and is one of the few flowers they don't bother, except for occasionally nipping off some of the flower tips. It makes an excellent container plant and will flower heavily even in a gallon pot.

Regular watering throughout the summer to keep the soil moist will help keep the plants growing vigorously throughout the season, however the roots grow deep and will survive with little water during the summer.

Our favorite uses for this plant are to line paths or create borders around other taller plants. The flowers, even though short-stemmed, are excellent for cutting and last a long time. We use this and other Aster varieties in our arrangements to supplement other flowers that cease to produce new flowers into the fall when the Asters start blooming.
