Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A diminutive and very compact selection of this Arizona/New Mexico native. Without the blooms and needle-like leaves, it looks like a dwarf conifer and indeed the base does turn semi-woody, excellent for the fairy garden. The long, tubular flowers are bright orange-red, bound to attract hummingbirds. P. pinifolius is reportedly hardy to USDA zone 4 and successfully grown as far north as Wisconsin. Rather poor and especially well drained soil, low on organic matter would be essential for cold climates. Either way, it's very drought tolerant and heat resistant plant.
