Magnolia virginiana var. australis is a hardy, medium-sized, single to multi-trunked, evergreen tree known as the sweet bay magnolia. Its cultivar 'Green Shadow' offers many interesting features. It has relatively large, 2-3 inch wide, cup-shaped, creamy white flowers with yellow stamens and a sweet lemony fragrance over a period of up to four months! The foliage is two-toned, green on top with silver undersides that flash in the breeze. Cone-shaped red-orange fruit follows the flowers. The bark is smooth and light grey. The tree will generally reach 25 feet tall and 20 feet wide. Adaptable to wet situations from wet feet to periodic flooding to swampy sites. Semi-evergreen in colder climates below zone 7. LIkely deciduous in zone 5 in cold winters. Most likely hardy in zone 4. For the 2025 Rare Flowering Tree Pre-Order plants will be recently potted in 15cm pots and about 1-2 feet tall.
Comes from seedlngs from Joe McDaniel sent to Don Shadow from Tennessee. This great evergreen tree will get 25’x15’. We sell many plants of M. virginiana in the Willamette Valley because of the wet soils. M. virginiana does very well in wet areas. The white flowers are 2” across and appear most of our summer.
A native Sweet Bay Magnolia, named for plantsman Don Shadow, with a tight oval habit and fragrant white flowers in June-July. Sweet Bay magnolias are tolerant of wet soil but can grow in average conditions as well.
