Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Fritillaria persica offers grape purple, bell-shaped flowers on tall spikes becoming purple-black with age. A florist's favourite, they make cut flowers to be treasured. Plant the bulb sideways to prevent rotting and mix sand or grit into the planting hole. Winter mulch in cool zones. In summer, provide afternoon shade in warmer ones. Good for naturalizing, most fritillaries contain poisonous alkaloids that protect them from rodents.
This plant is stellar sited in front of a light colored wall, stucco siding or a white picket fence - anyplace where the background contrasts sharply with the dark crimson purple to black flowers. Grown in gardens for almost 500 years, this is a spectacular heirloom variety.
