Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This beautiful upright grower brings weeks of color to the potted garden throughout the fall, just when many summer bloomers are finished. The deep, royal blue and white-striped flowers form large clusters at the tips of erect stems in fall and early winter. Not a true ginger, the trick to blooming this delightful species is to prune only at the end of its blooming cycle.
Dichorisandra thyrsiflora is often called the blue ginger due to it looking like a blue Costus ginger. It is in fact a member of the Commelinaceae family AKA wandering jew family. This plant holds it leaves up on stems 2 to 4 feet high and will bloom blue flowers once mature. The leaves when juvenile are often streaked with silver and white markings on green to yellow foliage. The markings tend to leave as the plant matures. The plant can be grown as a miniature if cut back from time to time making it usable in terrariums but it is often grown in tropical gardens or containers for the amazing blue flowers they produce.
Deep purplish-blue blooms are borne in 6" spikes in summer and fall. Tropical glossy green ginger like foliage is borne on stiff fleshy stems. Prefers humidity when in growth. A Dawn Stover Nifty Fifty favorite herbaceous plant! Dawn is a Research Associate at Stephen F Austin in Nacogdoches, TX and currently maintains the Mast Arboretum plant collection.
