Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Sacred datura is a vigorous herbaceous perennial that grows 1' tall and 6' wide. The flowers are the most striking feature, being sweetly fragrant white trumpets up to 8" long, margins often tinted purple. Very long blooming time. Blooms from April to October. The flowers open when cloudy or during the night. All parts of the plant contain a powerful narcotic, so place it wisely. Combine with other sun-and-dry lovers such as Sagebrush and Sages. Native to California and is also found elsewhere in North America and beyond. Hawk moths use the plant as one of it's main food sources in both adult and larval stages. Very powerful narcotic in small doses, deadly at anything higher. This plant was ritualistically used in religious ceremonies amongst a number of indigenous groups. Found in sandy washes and along roadsides. Communitites located in Coastal Sage Scrub, Valley Grassland, Joshua Tree Woodland, Pinyon-Juniper Woodland Between 0 and 4000 feet.
Plant is deciduous. Toxic if ingested. Full Sun to Part Shade. Large, showy, white flowers, 2 to 8" in diameter. Outdoor. Light/Bright Shade.

Another stunning member of the Datura genus. Got deer? Don’t like to water? Poor soil? This plant is for you! Multi-branching to 3’ tall & across, Datura wrightii will bloom all Summer, bearing huge, upright, flaring, white trumpets about 6” long & up to 8” across, followed by interesting 1” spiky seed pods. In the evening the flowers emit a strong, SWEET FRAGRANCE. The large, deep green leaves are attractive too & give bold textured interest in the garden. “Sacred Datura” is native to deserts of the Southwest & Mexico & so thrives in poor, hot, dry soil, as well as regular garden soil. Deciduous. Warning: Datura is poisonous!
