Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Absolutely eye-popping flower clusters abound over a long season on this sensational California native. This extra showy variety originates from a seedling grown by the late Ed Sampson of Mourning Cloak Botanical Garden and named after his wife. M. macrantha is native to S. Cal coast ranges and Baja, California and is particularly suited to rock gardens or containers as it requires low-nutrient soil and excellent drainage. Spreading into a low mat of shiny mid- green, lightly scented foliage 3” tall and 18” across, the wild riot of a bloom display appears from late Spring to Fall, each cluster bearing up to 25 upright, blazing scarlet-red narrow trumpets almost 2” long. Benefits from occasional Summer water. Hummer magnet! Deer resistant!
Monardella macrantha 'Marian Sampson' is a darling perennial groundcover with clusters of long, tubular, flaming red flowers that trumpet upwards from burgundy sepals all atop a shiny, blue-green mat of foliage. Requires infertile, sharply draining sites in full sun with only occasional summer water. Blooms from late spring into summer and is a magnet for hummingbirds. Great for rock gardens and containers which can greatly extend the lifespan of this plant as compared to garden situations with excessive moisture.
This selection of native bee balm from Ed Sampson of Mourning Cloak Ranch in Tehachapi, CA, proves to be more vigorous, free-flowering, and disease resistant than the species. To only 3-4" tall and evergreen, these perennials form clumps to over 1' wide with dark green leaves and clusters of large red tubular flowers, a bit of paradise for both hummingbirds and butterflies all summer long. Requires very good drainage and, though drought tolerant, does well with occasional summer water in sun with mulch or in part shade. Frost hardy to 0 °F USDA zone 7.
A choice disease-resistant cultivar of a native California evergreen perennial, 'Marian Sampson' forms a loose mat, good in a rock garden in bright shade, but is especially long-lived in containers. The flower is a knock-out with vermillion brush-like clusters of narrow tubular blooms that shoot straight upward June through August. It needs occasional summer watering; if too dry it will not survive. Hummingbirds and butterflies adore it. Minimum temperature: -40 °F
