Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Also known as the prickly apple cactus, this particular species is probably extinct in the wild. It was known only to a very small locality in Longboat Key, FL, near Sarasota. This heavily spined, columnar cactus grows very large flowers in the spring which form an unusually large round fruit that turns deep purple. Inside looks like a dragon fruit, with white flesh and many black seeds. The mother plant we use is probably the very last individual that ever existed in the wild. It was rescued from habitat development.
