Epimedium species novum 'Simple Beauty' plant details

Look out, it's a big leaved Epimedium. Big, spiny, textured, glossy leaves, to be more exact. A must for the Epimedium collector, as this is unique among the genus. The yellow flowers are large by Epimedium standards, and rise several inches above the leaves, making quite a statement. All this, plus the usual toughness of the genus, powering through dry shade or fairly sunny spots.

Epimedium species novum 'Simple Beauty' is a broadleaf evergreen perennial groundcover with green and red foliage. In spring yellow flowers emerge. Features glossy texture. Grows well with mostly sun - mostly shade and regular - occasional water. Drought tolerant once established. Adapts to various soil conditions. Does well in clay, rich, rocky and well-drained soil.

E.species novum ~ Very large, corrugated leaves with prominent veins emerge slight red cast, aging to very glossy green with long needle like spines around the heart shaped leaves. Vigorous grower. Large, spurred, sulfur yellow flowers with light green inner sepals in spring. Plant in nearly full sun to nearly full shade. Zones 5 to 9. Evergreen.
Intriguing species with very glossy, evergreen leaves with single leaflets. A very recently discovered and yet unnamed species discovered by Darrell Probst, who introduced it in 2010. Not wanting to make things complicated, but normally this new species has three leaflets, this particular selection, however, has only one - it’s that simple. To make things more dramatic, these simple leaves are very glossy, evergreen and up to 6" long! On top of all that, flowers stems rise 4-5" above the foliage, displaying medium-large sulphur-yellow flowers with long, curved spurs. Spreads 4-8" a year.
