Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Gladiolus nanus is a smaller, hardy (to zone 5!) gladiola native to Africa. 'Prins Claus' has orchid-like, pure white flowers with bold magenta and pink spots on the three lower petals. They have the benefit of a long bloom period, taking little space to grow such that they combine well with other plants, and make excellent cut flowers. Bulbs require good drainage. Leave the foliage to nourish the bulb after cutting back the flower stalk and mulch in winter.
Like a sibling of hardy glad Nymph, Prins Claus sports similar fan shaped lower petals with bright pink accents. In addition, the watercolor splotches are edged in orange, adding a snappy contrast that works beautifully with golds, oranges and apricots. This slender, winter hardy plant seems to pop out of nowhere and there is suddenly is - adding an unexpected splash to the border. Love it.
