An evergreen to semi-evergreen (in colder range) Magnolia with lustrous sea green elliptical leaves and fragrant white flowers in late June and July. Sometimes known as Swamp Magnolia as it is found in wet areas on the eastern seaboard, this small ornamental tree grows to 30' tall and between 10-20' wide. Although it enjoys moisture, it is adaptable to average soil and is even somewhat tolerant of seashore conditions. Shipping 1 gallon plants
This outstanding selection retains its lustrous, deep green foliage even at temperatures as low as -15 ºF. In early summer, lemon-scented blooms of creamy-white appear, with repeat bloom continuing into fall. Open, upright habit. 25' x 25'.
Named by the great plantsman Joe McDaniel, M.v. 'Henry Hicks' has been very hardy to -20° F and came from a seedling from the Scott Arboretum at Swathmore, Philadelphia.
