Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Wild lilac and blue blossom are both wonderfully descriptive names for this large (6-15') western native, garden-adaptable shrub when it produces its fragrant, late spring flowers of pale azure to deep brightest ultra-marine. S/M-D/GDr
Blueblossom ceanothus is a hardy, large evergreen shrub 15' to 25' and is Endemic (limited) to California alone. Blueblossom is an attractive plant with glossy green 2'' leaves and a fragrant sky-blue blossom flower show in spring. Great choice for a sunny coastal garden! Found in the coastal range, from Santa Barbara Co, to southern Oregon Attracts insects for food for tanagers, shrikes, and others. Nectar source for hummingbirds and seed for bushtits, finches. Larval food for Spring Azure, Pale Swallowtail, Lorquin's Admiral. The Kashaya Pomo people used the flowers in wreathes and mixed them with water to make soap for washing the body. Found in wooded slopes and canyons, often near streams, in evergreen forests in california. Communitites located in Chaparral, Redwood Forest, Mixed Evergreen Forest, Northern Coastal Scrub Between 0 and 1968 feet.
Native to the coast of Oregon and California, this very hardy and adaptable "wild lilac" is the parent of many popular hybrids including 'Victoria'. It will make a large shrub or small tree to about 14' with glossy evergreen leaves. When I drove the Oregon Coast in May 2002, this plant lit up the hillsides with its explosion of blue flowers. It is one of the most adaptable Ceanothus when it comes to tolerating heat and some summer moisture. Hardy to 0 °F.
Amazing, native ceanothus, a parent of many cultivars and spectacular in its own right. A large, evergreen shrub, with typically crinkled, dark green leaves, and large clusters of pale blue, sweetly fragrant flowers in spring. Can reach 12' tall or more and does well on the bright edge of woodlands. Sun to part shade in well-drained soil. Drought tolerant but appreciative of occasional deep watering in summer. Frost hardy in USDA zone 8.
