Spring brings rich yellow shoots set against the deep green of mature foliage. Will reach 6-7 feet tall and 3 feet wide in 10 years.
The short, glossy dark green winter needles are overlaid by butter-yellow new shoots in the spring, which gives this cultivar a dazzling effect - easily as showy as most flowering plants. As the summer begins, the new needles turn a dark glossy green. It grows as a narrow pyramid, which allows it to be used in smaller landscapes than most other tall growing evergreens. In cultivation since 1919, it is similar to and often confused with Picea orientalis 'Aurea'. Emerging spring foliage is stunning; the golden shoots gradually change to deep green. Unlike 'Skylands', this never burns and is a traffic stopper in spring.
New shoot growth is golden yellow, inner growth is green. Contrast is awesome! These plants grow very slowly into a compact narrow cone 5-6' tall in ten years. Found in Germany in 1909. Awards: First Class Certificate & Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.
