Corylus avellana is a broadleaf deciduous fruit / vegetable, shrub or tree with green foliage. In spring and winter cream flowers emerge followed by brown fruit. Attracts bees and birds making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens. Grows well with sun and regular water. Does well in average, rich and well-drained soil.
Common hazel (Corylus avellana) is a big, deciduous shrub reaching at least 14 feet. It is found in natural stands throughout Europe and is also used widely in hedgerows. The twigs are used as dowsing rods by water diviners
The common hazel is a highly adaptable pioneer species, able to grow in both sun and part shade. I likes nutrient-rich soil. The tree is, however, extremely tolerant to different climatic conditions and is even able to withstand frost in the growing season.
Harvest nuts in about 2-3 years. You may either hand pick or lay a cloth under the tree and tap the limbs to make the nuts drop. Nets may be used to keep the squirrels away.
Trees can grow up to 20' but can be kept at 10-12' x 10-12' and should be planted no more than 15' apart for good pollination.
11-25 lbs (5-11 kg) depending on the size of the plant.
