Exquisite, bright-magenta, poppy-like blossoms grace this trailing native perennial from May to June. Plants have lovely palmately divided leaves which form to become a spreading mat 3' wide and just 6-9" high. This wonderful Midwestern native is make a beautiful groundcover and is a good choice for containers or tubs. This wildflower is incredible planted with other natives such as Asclepias and Baptisia. Also known as wine cups for its 1-2” wide chalice shaped magenta blooms, this native of the Midwest to Southwest is a versatile summer-blooming perennial that has garnered the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. Lovely as a ground cover, it combines beautifully with low-growing sedum on dry banks, and is especially effective spilling over a rock wall. Tap-rooted, it sales through periods of drought once fully established. Soils should be very well-drained and of regular to medium moisture. Grow in masses for maximum impact. Self sows.
The luscious, glowing, magenta flowers of wine cups is an extremely showy native to the midwestern US. Superficially you might think it's a hardy geranium but despite the similar deeply cut leaves, closer inspection of the flowers will reveal that it is a mallow. Wine cups has a sprawling nature with ground-hugging stems. It looks best spilling over a wall or weaving through other perennials. Infertile and well-drained soil is best in full sun. Blooms all summer.
This native thrives at the front of the border, in the wild garden and Xeriscape where it enjoys the full sun, blooming with wine-red flowers from April to hard frost. Perennial. Xeriscape. Ordinary loam is best. USDA zones 3-9 (up to 8,000').
Luscious & glowing, cerise-magenta “Wine Cups” is one of the showiest of our native Midwestern perennials. Thriving in heat & low water, it’s a sprawling plant with ground-hugging stems to 3’ long, producing lots of bright, 2”, open-faced cups for several months in Summer. The attractive, deep green, deeply cut, roundish leaves provide a welcome relief from the more common silvery grays of the dry garden. Its trailing form looks best spilling over a wall or front of a dry bed or scrambling through short grasses. Striking when combined with fuzzy gray plants like “Lamb’s Ears” or one of my favorites, Sideritis cypria or partnered with lemon yellow bloomers. Infertile & well-drained soil is best.
