    Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Selenicereus megalanthus (syn. Hylocereus megalanthus) is a highly prized cactus vine that is cultivated for its sweet dragon fruit or pitaya amarilla and enormous night-blooming fragrant flowers. The fruit is oblong and about 4-6 inches long by 3-4 inches wide with a bumpy yellow skin. The flesh is white with crunchy black seeds and super sweet, the sweetest of the dragon fruit. White flowers are nocturnal and usually last just one night where pollination is necessary to set fruit. A cool houseplant with the potential for delicious edible fruit.

The Dragon Fruit is a vining, terrestrial with fleshy stems. White, fragrant flowers adorn the plant in late spring to early fall. Flowers are elaborate and bloom only at night. Produces round, Yellow colored fruits. The round fruit is covered with distinguished scales and can get up to 5 inches long. Enclosed in the thin rind is a large mass of sweetly flavored White colored pulp and numerous small black seeds. The fruit can be eaten out-of-hand, and is also used as a flavoring in pastries and drinks. In full production, Yellow may have up to 4 fruiting cycles per year. We recommend 2-3 different var. for proper cross pollination.
