Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Exceptionally long, dark green needles give this pine a handsome appearance. This more compact version of the species is better for a smaller garden.
A globe-shaped variety of the Western Jeffrey Pine, 'Joppi' has a dwarf form but retains the extremely long needles which can grow up to 16 inches long. Trees grow to about ten feet tall and ten feet wide with a perfectly rounded form. The long needles are very straight and give the tree a crisp outline. Perfect for rock gardens and high-elevation themed gardens.

The type species of Jeffrey Pine grows in the mountains surrounding our nursery and often grows on harsh sites where few other trees will grow. It is one of the few tree species that will grow on the abundant serpentine rocks that make up the Siskiyou mountain range where there is almost no calcium present in the soil. These trees are very heat and drought tolerant once established and will thrive in a wide range of soils, although they prefer well drained soils to clay.
