Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Phoenix Japanese Maple gets its name from its spring color. This Japanese maple rises like the mythical Phoenix in the spring with feathery leaves that are deep red, fading to green in the summer. Phoenix Japanese Maple will make a great addition to your landscape with this stunning spring and similar fall colors or oranges and reds.
This maple becomes a delightfully upright 8-10' tree with a bushy form, like the feathers of the mythical Phoenix. Foliage emerges in spring a delightfully vivid, bright-pink overlaid with yellow veins which then matures to soft-green by summer. In autumn the foliage lights up in shades orange to red sherbet; a fine specimen! S-PSh/M
New leaves emerge a beautiful hot-pink color, eventually fading to a lighter green color with pink overtones. Fall color is a fantastic color as well.
Acer palmatum ‘Phoenix’ is in the group of maples that have outstanding pink or red/pink new growth which changes to green for the summer and then ends with a spectacular fall crimson red finish. However, Phoenix adds one new element during the spring – yellow veins are visible in the leaves – this is known as reticulation. This maple has a bushy form and may reach about 5′ tall and 3′ wide in 10 years. Like most Japanese Maples morning sun and afternoon shade is preferred. Soil should be well-drained or if clay, or other the maple should be mounded to keep the roots above the soggy soil. If you spend a little more time up front in the planting phase you will be rewarded with a happy and healthy JM for many years. Once established this maple is hardy to -20 degrees – USDA Zone 5.
