Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Zn 7. Redish brown bark. Gray green foliage
Big berry Manzanita is an evergreen shrub to small tree, with red-brown bark, 7-10' foot high and wide. Grows well in arid and near-desert climates. Needs little water, likes full sun. Tolerates salty soil and will grow in snow covered regions. Needs good drainage and garden water the first year, then quite drought tolerant. Red berry-fruits are edible. Can be used to make a cider-like beverage, as well as flavoring for foods and drinks. Leaves can be used for tea and a dye can be extracted as well. Native to California and is also found outside of California, but is confined to western North America. Bees and butterflies love the dense clusters of flowers and birds enjoy the small fruits. All Arctostaphylos species have similar uses. The berries are edible and when mixed with water they make a nice cider. When ripe, crush the berries and mix with water. Let the mixture stand for several hours and strain out the berries. Found in dry slopes. Communitites located in Chaparral, Joshua Tree Woodland Between 0 and 4500 feet.
Selections of A. glauca can be temperamental in nursery and garden situations, but standing among a mature grove of bigberry manzanita will leave you breathless. It is little wonder we keep looking for a garden tolerant selection. Our experimental selections are from Figueroa Mountain. This upright shrub, growing to 15', has large blue-gray leaves and dark brown bark that often peels on young stems, revealing a delicate lime green inner layer. Flowers are white. Plant in full sun and well-drained soils with little or no summer water.
