From rocky places in the Eastern Cape and Lesotho, South Africa – this sculptural aloe has spiraling leaves on stems to 5' tall on plants 3' wide – terminal flowers of lemon yellow spikes in summer – excellent drainage or container plant – Sun – Hardy to 15 °F for us…we think it may go lower, references place it in USDA Zone 8b.
Of all the Aloes touted as cold-hardy, this is the one that actually is, and won't give you any trouble about winter moisture or drainage or any of those other bothersome trivialities that frequently afflict hardy succulents. Rising to 4 - 5' and spreading wider over time, stems of succulent, true-Aloe leaves are eventually topped with very showy red and yellow flower spikes. It will be happy in full sun with some summer water and freedom from competition from other plants, and not-too-heavy soil. In a normal Seattle or Portland garden, it does very well, though it will not grow quickly without irrigation. This plant is truly a must have for any subtropical, Mediterranean or desert-themed garden (and I'm not just saying that to try to sell it (although I would, admittedly, but in this case, I'm not)). Hardy to at least 10 °F once established, though if the temperature drops below about 16 °F, it may freeze to the ground.
Hardy to 15 degrees! A vigorous grower to 3’ or 4’ tall, it can ramble around & reach 6’ wide. The brilliant yellow flowers are fairly large & emerge in late Fall thru Winter. Easy & requires little care. Just rich, well drained soil & part sun to full sun along the coast. Wonderful in a large container.

Multi-trunked shrub from South Africa, the hardiest of the shrubby aloes. To over 3 ft tall and possibly up to 6 ft wide with dark green leaves, long, narrow, and pointed, and yellow flowers in spring and summer continuing into fall. Plant in sun where drainage is good. Top hardy to 18 °F, upper USDA zone 8; has resprouted from 0 °F zone 7, or below with mulch, good drainage, and protection from winter moisture.
