Nursery contributed plant descriptions

We had been selling this as O. x mollis for years, since that was what we originally got it as, but on a quest for information resulting in far more than I ever wanted to know about Olearia (and thanks to a helpful tip from a friend), I recently learned the real name is O. x oleifolia. Supposedly this is a hybrid of O. avicennifolia and O. odorata; we wonder how someone figured that out since it is a natural hybrid and looks nothing like O. odorata. But at least we can feel confident in the name oleifolia. This is a great plant! It comes from Westland in the area northwest of Queenstown, in a very cold, wet, and rugged part of the Southern Alps. Reaching a size of about 4' tall and 7' wide, its grey leaves with white undersides are attractive at all seasons, and masses of white midsummer flowers have a rather airy quality about them. Content in sun or part shade, it is easily hardy to at least 10°F, perhaps 5°F.
