Eye-catching beardtongue, a selection of the native Western species, with neon-red blooms atop long, slender stems that, you guessed it, sway delicately in the summer breeze. To 24" tall and 18" wide. Plant in the perennial border and watch them like a good movie. One of the longest blooming Penstemons around, too, from late spring to early fall. Full sun. Well-drained soil. Extremely drought tolerant. Frost hardy to USDA zone 5.
Riding Hood Red' has dramatic spikes of lipstick red, tubular flowers that bloom for most of the summer and send our hummingbirds into conniptions! Also a good cut flower. Beautiful foliage. If you've had trouble overwintering Penstemon in the past, try cultivars of this species P. barbatus. It tends to be a strong, long-lived plant overwintering in pots outdoors out our exposed nursery when others might fail under the stress.
Hummers adore this pretty RED flowering Beard Tongue...and we love it too for its cold and drought tolerance! Compact, branching growth 18-24” tall over handsome evergreen basal foliage (about 18” wide) with spikes and spikes of coral red tubular blooms from early summer thru fall. Full sun, average to well drained soil, rabbit resistant. Butterfly favorite, cut flowers, nice in pots!
