We initially got M.'Genie' because it was a small grower (10'x4' over 10 years). But we were amazed at how rich the flower color is. The flowers have rounded tepals and beautiful purple reddish color.
This deciduous magnolia delights with long spring to summer blooms that frequently repeats in midsummer. Blooms begin as a striking blackish-red buds that open into tulip-shaped blooms of dark magenta. Sweet subtle scent with a rich aroma.
Very dark black-red tulip-shaped buds open a dark maroon with reflexed tips of light magenta. The flower season tends to be long and often repeats itself in midsummer. Lightly scented with a rich aroma this flowering tree demands a special place in the garden.
Perfect for smaller gardens, this spectacular Magnolia delights with a long spring to summer season of blooms. More than a decade in the breeding, Genie lives up to its name with almost magical color, fragrance and form.

The result of 15 years of breeding resulting in a compact, small tree maturing at perhaps 10-13 feet tall. Sensational black-red buds open to small globular tulip-shaped blooms of deep rich maroon-purple on both surfaces, with nicely reflexed tepal tips paling to a lighter magenta rose shade. ‘Genie’ has lightly scented blooms from early spring to early summer, and mid to late summer where conditions are not too dry.
