An outstanding accent, this contorted 6-8' shrub with its wonderfully, twisted, outward-spreading branches is dressed in buds and leaves of rich dark burgundy! Mature plants display gorgeous, dangling pink catkins in winter. This delightful conversation piece is also resistant to filbert blight. A fine introduction from Oregon State University. S-PSh/M PP200694
An amazing new introduction from Oregon State University's breeding program, Red Dragon Hazelnut/Filbert is a significant improvement on the common Harry Lauder's Walking Stick. Red Dragon has the same contorted leaves and stems as Harry Lauder's Walking Stick, but the winter flowers, stems, and leaves are deep red. The other primary improvement, which was the actual purpose of the breeding program, is that Red Dragon is Eastern Filbert Blight resistant which Harry Lauder's is not. Sadly, many of the Harry Lauder's plants have been dying from this disease as it sweeps across the nation. Luckily, us gardeners and landscapers now have a suitable replacement for this wonderful plant.

When it comes to shaping this focal-point shrub, it generally looks best pruned to a single or three main trunks and staked up to a height of about 8 feet. Many of the branches will hang down and create a weeping shrub with twisting and contorted branches. We recommend pruning plants to keep the tips of the hanging branches about one foot off the ground to give them an easily achieved manicured shape.

Our plants are grown on their own roots so you will never have to worry about pruning suckering green stems that would otherwise threaten the graft.

This contorted hzelnut will make a 10'-12' shrub that every branch and leaf twists. so fun! the foliage is purple in spring and early summer. These are layers we found at our supplier for our hazelnut farm.
