Unusual and rarely offered this evergreen perennial looks like a large leafed Mondo Grass, but will cover the ground faster! Nice ground cover in open woodland or around shrubs, prefers moist shade but will take more sun if it gets enough water. 3-8" tall, spreading; light pink flowers followed by red berries; glossy, rich foliage. Also performs very well in containers.
Zn 6. Grass-like clumps with pink flowers.
Very tidy, evergreen ground cover for shade and even very dense shade. Slowly spreading. Liriope-like, very fragrant, pinkish flowers emerge from purple buds to be followed by beautiful bright pink berries. Choice and very easy. Becomes more gorgeous with age as the colony grows and develops. Some summer water is the trick. Quite hardy too. Frost hardy to USDA zone 6.
Interesting little (3"-6") tall plant in the Liliaceae family. Glossy rich supple foliage and interesting flesh pink flowers that become cool berries. Quick to multiply. Can't comment on the hardiness yet as I haven't had a chance to plant it out. Jelitto and Schacht observe that in order to survive the Winter, they need a hot dry Summer location to harden off. This is one of those plants that would be easy enough to pull in a little piece and grow as a house plant over the Winter just in case.
Reineckea carnea is an unusual and uncommon evergreen groundcover for the shade garden. It has long, narrow, slightly arching, rich green leaves up to 12 inches long from slowly spreading rhizomes and can form a nice small mat with time. The pink, fragrant flowers sit amongst the foliage on dark pink spikes opening from dark pink buds in summer. May produce red fruit later in the season.
This Reineckea hails from Japan and has low, grassy evergreen foliage with small candles of pink-backed white flowers in June followed by little red fruits. A nice little easy slow carpeter and very good under larger Rhododendrons or as a small-scale groundcover.
A rare Himalyan evergreen (in mild climates) ground cover that is somewhat similar to Liriope. Small pink lily-like flowers are borne on darker purplish-pink spikes among the foliage. A tough and easy shade plant as a groundcover and for containers or hanging baskets.
