Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This is a seedling of the white form with open and large flower heads of .5" florets surrounded by a rosette of glossy, upright leaves. To debunk a misconception, it comes not from Peru but from the Mediterranean. It was brought to England on a ship called The Peru in the 17th century leading Linnaeus to misunderstand and, subsequently misname it. It needs a hot, dry, dormant rest period in summer to bloom in spring. That's easy in the Northwest! Minimum temperature: 0 °F
A pretty outrageous bulb which despite it's name has never been to Peru but originates in southern Spain. This is a robust plant and nearly evergreen just taking a brief break in the heat of summer. On this uncommon form, big heads of white flowers appear in late spring. The top of the bulb is just an inch or two below the soil surface and during arctic blasts, a mulch is beneficial.
