Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Summersweet. Handsome shrub to eventual small tree with a narrow habit from a collection in Sichuan at around 9000 meters. Valued for midsummer white scented flowers held on long finger-like panicles. This species has a wide range from Vietnam to northern India and throughout a large portion of China. This species exhibits as much variation in characteristics across its range as we citizens do in the US of A. It is very likely that Northwest Port Townsenders such as ourselves would be recognized as being from away should we wander the streets of Birmingham or Brooklyn and the differences among various geographical races of Clethra delavayi are no less pronounced.
