Nursery contributed plant descriptions

The wonderful leaves which are larger than the species (up to 5 inches long), are a glossy maroon-black in spring, fading to purple-green in summer and a showy copper in autumn, they make this 50-60' (rarely up to 100') broad-crowned variety one of the very best of the beech clan; a stately and magnificent tree. S/M
Deep purple, shiny leaves, upright when young, spreading to form a 60 ft. globe at maturity. Long in cultivation: cemeteries in many Eastern US cities were often planted with this or other purple beeches that have grown to monarch specimens today. Fast-growing in the nursery, they make great field plants to bump later into a #15-20 container.
Large lustrous purple leaves on on a large tree. Zone 5.
Broad oval shape, Deep purple spring leaves turn bronzy purple in summer. Hardy to USDA zone 5.
Another form of this most stately tree. The black-purple leaves clothe the branches like a velvet stole. Leaves will glisten royally in the sunshine. This selection becomes a large, dignified specimen.
