Nursery contributed plant descriptions

One of the first Magnolias to flower, this erect 10-15' shrub produces its rosy-purple 4" flowers in early spring. S/M
Betty Magnolia is part of the 'Little Girl' series ('Ann', 'Betty', 'Jane', 'Judy', 'Pinkie', 'Randy', 'Ricki' and 'Susan'). Large, fragrant fuchsia flowers with pink overtones appear in early spring before the foliage comes out. Betty is a low maintenance, compact, shrubby tree that has a medium growth rate. Betty Magnolia prefers acidic soils with good drainage.
Flowers purple/red on outside, white inside on a 12 ft. tall rounded shrub with copper-colored new foliage in spring.
Another from the girl series, flowers deep purple red outside, white inside; plants are rather large reaching 10-15'.
Another beauty from 'The Girls' (occasionally called erroneously, Little Girls) series of magnolias from the National Arboretum - a group of Magnolias which bloom about 2-4 weeks later than M. stellata and M. x soulangiana which decreases the possibility of spring frost damage. They grow as multi-stemmed large shrubs or small trees with slightly leathery leaves that stand up to both heat and drought. In winter, they hold your interest with smooth gray bark and fuzzy flower buds making them a 4-Season plant. Grow best in sun to LIGHT shade. Large, fragrant 8" blooms with as many as 19 petals, purplish-red on the outside, white on the inside, carried over a long period in the spring (in part because it's sterile and spend no energy making seed).

A Kosar hybrid of M. kobus var. stellata 'Rosea' x M. liliiflora 'Nigra'. A rounded magnolia, more a shrub than tree, with ovate, deep green leaves that are 6" long. Midspring brings large, cup shaped flowers 8" across that are purple-red on the outside and white inside. Grows to 12'.
