We've had this beautiful hardy agapanthus for 30+ years. The flowers are rich navy blue. Has survived below 10º without any damage.
Large and dark like a thundercloud, huge 6-8" deep purple-blue flower heads on tall, sturdy 4' stems are produced much of the summer above bright-green clumps of wide strap-like leaves; this is a striking perennial that you do not want to miss! S-PSh/M
This is a seedling from Mood Indigo, a cultivar developed at the Los Angeles Arboretum. The flowers rise on 3 to 4' stems and have over 100 flowers per umbel. The flowers are a very dark blue violet color. One of the darkest. There is some confusion over whether this a deciduous variety. It is definitely deciduous. It may be semi in Southern California. Both its parents are deciduous.
This beautiful cultivar is big and bold with loose spheres of cobalt blue flowers that rise up to four feet above the long, strap-like foliage. Wonderful in beds, en masse or in pots.
It was Barrie Coate's discerning eye that chose this magnificent darkly hued treasure from a batch of Agapanthus 'Mood Indigo' seedlings when he was director of California's Saratoga Horticultural Foundation. Touted as the richest and darkest flowers of the genus, amazing huge purple-laced blue globes each house up to 100 individual florets on strong, thick greenish black lustrous stalks. The nearly iridescent floral presentation is beguiling to garden visitors and hummingbirds, gathering some 3 or 4' above a large lush evergreen clump of shiny bright green strap-like leaves, which transmutes purple and red shades in winter and provides year-round bold foliar texture.
A thick-leafed cultivar growing to 3', with radiant dark blue flowers.
6-8" wide clusters of deep purplish-blue, 1" blooms are borne atop the 4' stalks in summer. Considered by many to be the best of all Agapanthus varieties. Drought tolerant once established. Foliage goes dormant in winter. The Lily of the Nile is a long-lived reliable clump forming perennial that makes a wonderful addition to the garden or landscape. Agapanthus will perform best in well-drained soils with average moisture and fertility. Deer resistant and moderately salt tolerant.
Blooms: summer, intense purple-blue/ deciduous, fleshy strappy foliage Zone 7-10. 12"-36", South Africa, part shade-sun, moist-dry, well drained
A brilliantly Saphire blue variety with flowers 3-4 ft high. Agapanthus produce flowers prolifically through the spring and summer. The foliage and blooming habbits supperficially resembles that of a Day-Lily. They like more sun in cool climates, and more shade in hot areas. The tall, long lasting umbles produce dozens, even hundreds of small flowers for a striking display. Cold hardy in zones 8+, elsewhere, it can be potted and brought inside to survive the winter. For sale are plants in 2 & 1/2 inch pots. They grow quickly, but do not always bloom the first year. WE CAN NOT SHIP LIVE PLANTS INTERNATIONALLY!
All Agapanthus species come from South Africa from the Cape of Good Hope to the Limpopo river. These dark, purple-blue umbels hover on slender, 3–4-foot tall stems — a reliable, cold-hardy addition to the summer border!
A spectacular hybrid with deep cobalt-blue flower heads that measure 6" across and stand up to 6' above the lush grass-like foliage. They appear in early to midsummer. A little hardier than other Agapanthus and a terrific container plant that's easily overwintered indoors in colder climates.
