Nursery contributed plant descriptions

One of the smaller flowering kosar hybrids we grow. The flowers show the M. liliflora parent and cover the plant in spring.
Ann Magnolia is part of the 'Little Girl' series ('Ann', 'Betty', 'Jane', 'Judy', 'Pinkie', 'Randy', 'Ricki' and 'Susan'). Large fragrant pink-purple flowers are white on the inside creating a unique depth to the large blooms. Ann blooms in late spring, later than most magnolias. Its dense form can be used for privacy or can be pruned into a small tree shape.
Sweetly cinnamon-scented pink-purple blooms decorate this vigorous small tree of National Arboretum introduction (M. liliflora x M. stellata). S/M
Ann' is a deciduous Magnolia with deep purple or red flowers in late April to early May. It is very similar to 'Betty' in flower size and habit, and both bloom later in the season - lowering the risk of frost damage on the flowers. 'Ann' is also far more vigorous than other Magnolia species yet remains stocky and mid-sized without pruning, an excellent and combination of traits in a plant. Because of its short branching habit 'Ann' is one of the best Magnolia varieties for medium to large sized bonsai specimens.
Watering and Care
Ann is a fairly drought tolerant variety but will grow and flower better with summer watering. Prune in summer to prevent cutting off flower buds in the winter. Mulching is always beneficial.

Propagating Ann Magnolia
Best propagated using softwood cuttings of long, leafy growth in early summer under mist. Hardwood cuttings in late winter are also usually successful. Because 'Ann' can be propagated from cuttings rather than having to be grafted, plants are usually a much better deal than varieties that can only be grafted, which typically doubles or triples the production cost.

A purple flowering magnolia that fits perfectly in any landscape, Ann Magnolia has deep purple-red flowers with 7-9 tepals in the shape of a tulip. She blooms in March and sporadically re-blooms thru the summer. She will fill a room with the fragrance of cinnamon.

Deep purple/red flowers, blooming before 'Betty'. A vigorous dependable and easily grown stocky shrub.
A Kosar hybrid of M. stellata 'Rosea' x M. liliiflora 'Nigra', this vigorous and hardy deciduous magnolia will be a small tree of 15-25' with multi-stemmed, round or pyramidal habit. The flowers are pink-purple and erect when in full bloom. It blooms the earliest of the "Little Girls" with a spicy fragrance of cinnamon. 'Ann' will turn heads when in bloom, as she is very pretty!
