A dwarf growth habit makes Fig 'Violette de Bordeaux' well adapted for containers. The medium-sized, purplish-black fruit has a sweet, dark red interior and many people consider this variety to be one of the best tasting figs for fresh eating or preserves. 'Violette de Bordeaux' produces an early breba crop followed by a later fruit set in the fall. Because of its small size and hardiness to zone 6, this is an ideal fruit for home gardens.
Negronne produces large black figs with a deep red flesh and rich acidic flavor. Negronne is known to produce a breba crop. Negronne is also known by the names Beer's Black, Bourdeaux, Petite Figue Violette, and Violette de Bourdeaux Figs have long been considered the fruit of the gods and anyone who has enjoyed the sweet delicacy of a fresh, fully ripe fig can see why. They are high in fiber, calcium, potassium, and iron as well as containing other vitamins and minerals. To enjoy figs throughout the year consider drying, canning, or preserving them. Fig trees do best where they get at least 8 hours of direct sun per day. Once well established they are fairly drought tolerant but extended dry periods can cause leaf and fruit drop as well as early dormancy. A deep organic mulch will help to alleviate extremes in moisture levels, reduce nematode issues, as well as to reduce competition from weeds.
Nearly black fruit has dark red flesh. A naturally small tree, it is well suited for container growing or confined spaces.
