From a massive brown-scaled crown (to 4" across) 2-4' erect-arching fronds (pinnate-pinnatifid: doubly divided) rise in a vase shape; handsome as specimen/focal point, it was once used in poultices for treating wounds.
Thick Stemmed Wood Fern forms a handsome 3' vase shaped clump rising from a massive 4" crown. This fern remains somewhat evergreen but will collapse and simply lie flat for the winter.
This form has large rhizomes. Said to have a large trunk. This eastern Asian form is evergreen but the fronds will lay flat on the ground.
Dryopteris crasshirizoma This attractive fern has a huge crown of erect, arching fronds. Makes an excellent specimen in the landscape. Grows to a height of 24 to 36 inches
