Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A large and stunning species from Costa Rica, Wercklea has leaves that can reach up to 2' across with pronounced, deep red veins. The leaves and stems are covered with spines so it's an 'enjoy my beauty but don't touch me" plant. The leaf stems are red and clear yellow flowers form along the trunk. It takes a bit of room to grow since a container specimen will reach 4' high by 3' wide. Wercklea makes a captivating focal point in the garden, and it's quite a conversation piece between gardeners since it's so rare and not often seen. If it over-grows its given space, it can be pruned back to its original form and it will regrow quickly. Provide warm temperatures above 60°F during the winter months for optimum growth. Wercklea is a rare plant for collectors who value the exotic.
