Hedychium spicatum is a broadleaf deciduous perennial bulb / corm / tuber with green foliage. In fall and summer yellow flowers emerge. Grows well with sun and even moisture water. Does well in average, rich and well-drained soil. A good option if you're seeking something verticillium wilt resistant.
This species is one of the hardiest in the genus. It blooms in August with pale yellow, butterfly-like flowers and bright red stamens. Hedychium are related to the culinary ginger Zingiber officinale. Where hardy, they add subtropical foliage and exotic late summer and fall flowers to the garden. Grow in warm spots in full to part sun with rich soil and abundant moisture. Mulch with fallen leaves in winter. They are also easy to grow in pots and can be protected in a frost free area for winter or grown as a houseplant.
