If you are not familiar with Wood Aster you should be! This is an extremely sturdy selection of a celebrated species requiring little human intervention. Neat little mound, 12-18” with lots of little white asters with yellow centers August >September that attract butterflies. Deep red stems contrast with flowers. Performs admirably in dry shade! Prefers good soil but tolerates most soils (clay, rocky); part shade to full shade. Will take moderate watering but dislikes summer wet.
Aster divaricatus 'Eastern Star' was originally discovered in coastal Rhode Island. It is shorter than the standard species and has deep, dark, shining, mahogany stems. The small but numerous white flowers with yellow centers fade to subtle burgundy and rose-pink. A must for the shade garden and tolerant of dry shade which makes it a real bonus.
White Wood Aster is an often overlooked blousy addition for the fall shade garden. Curiously, it is more popular abroad than it is here in the states. Aster divaricatus grows 18-24" tall, tolerates dry soil quite well and pairs nicely with Heuchera villosa for an easy care combo.
This selection of the native aster was originally collected in neighboring Rhode Island; it brings another dimension of beauty and usefulness to the shady woodland edge. More compact than the species, it has handsome dark green foliage and deep burgundy stems holding the clouds of white daisies aloft. We love how it faithfully appears every late summer and fall to freshen up drier, difficult areas in part shade with stars of pure white. Butterflies depend on this lovely!
Thin petaled white flowers top dark green foliage of this wonderful 18" Aster in September and October. Foliage can develop some red fall color as well. Prefers rich well drained soil in partial shade, but tolerates dry shade.
