Smaller growing m. grandiflora that is much hardier than M. g. 'Little Gem'. We have given up on growing M. 'Little Gem' as it continues to grow into fall, then gets frozen. M. g 'Brackens Brown Beauty' stops growing in fall. So, seems much hardier. The small leaves will have dark indumentum on a small tree.
Six inch leaves which are a lustrous green on top and rusty brown beneath gave this handsome stately tree (to 20-40' x 15-25') its name and are the backdrop for its lovely fragrant 5-6" white early summer flowers. S/M
This evergreen magnolia maintains a very dense habit, producing a compact oval crown. The new leaves are yellow-green, changing to dark green at maturity. The leaves have a rusty brown on the under side which gives a distinctive green and brown coloration to the entire tree. There is a summer profusion of creamy white, fragrant flowers. Winner of the 2003 Gold Medal from the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society and one of the most cold hardy! Growth Rate medium
Considered one of the best Southern Magnolia cultivars by many horticulturalists--and also one of the most cold hardy--this one with somewhat narrower leaves, shorter but more numerous branching, and a very dense, erect shape. Backs of the leaves are deep brown, thus the name, and flowers are large, fragrant, and saucer-shaped. Overall, we concur, a very nice selection. Height to 30-50' and width to 15-20'. Full sun with rich, moist soil. Evergreen. Frost hardy to USDA zone 7. Magnoliaceae
One of the best ornamental and cold hardy Southern Magnolia. Pyramidal evergreen growth to 35'. Fragrant cream colored flowers in late spring and well into summer.
