Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Very easy to grow, Hellebores (also known as Lenten Rose) varieties flower before almost any other plant, starting as early as January. We love this plant because it makes us feel like spring is right around the corner, and gives us something new and refreshing to look at in the landscape.

'Ballerina Ruffles' is an exciting new variety that produces beautiful double blooms with various tones of pinks and purples, even on young plants. The petals hold their color much longer than other Hellebore varieties, in fact plants at our nursery often hold their color for up to three months!

Hellebores grow relatively slowly and often produce new growth only in the spring. However, growth rates can be greatly improved by amending the soil with compost and shredded pine bark before planting and using a slow release fertilizer such as Osmocote in March and again in early summer. Water once per week during the summer and remove old tattered leaves one or two times to keep the plant actively growing during the summer. Doing this we have been able to get small single-leaf divisions to flower within one year!

The strain produces very large thee and a half inch, rich pink double flowers. The Winter Thrillers Series is bred by Chris Hansen who has spent more 20 years perfecting his strains. Exact flower colour will vary between plants as this is a seed strain. Deer resistant. Perennial Plant of the Year 2005.
