Zingiber malaysianum is a broadleaf evergreen perennial bulb / corm / tuber with black, burgundy and chocolate foliage. In summer pink, white and yellow flowers emerge. Features glossy texture. Grows well with mostly sun - shade and even moisture - regular water. Does well in average, rich and well-drained soil. Ornamental ginger! Very lossy dark brown leaves on olive-colored canes. Very fragrant when rubbed, somewhat smells like ginger and overheated car coolant (lol...). Produces yellowish flowers close to the base.
Glossy almost black, lacquered leaves. Producing basal inflorescence, that are cone shaped. First it is yellow, then tiny pink flowers emerge & turn into pink cone shaped flowers. REALLY STUNNING. Grows best in some shade but can tolerate full sun. Zones 7 and higher.
'Midnight Black' Beautiful reddish brown to almost black slender leaves with a shiny lacquered finish atop upright stems. Basal cones produce yellow flowers turning pink with age. Likes part sun to filtered shade, moist, warmth. Grows 2-5' tall and spreads 1-2', hardy zone 9-10. The plants may be trimmed to fit in box for shipping. In winter, they may be dormant potted rhizomes. Leaves have the fragrance of ginger.
