Starship' Scarlet Lobelia is a hybrid variety with dark green leaves and scarlet-red flowers on stalks about two feet tall. The plants establish very quickly and bloom heavily in their first year, with a one gallon plant producing as many as 20 simultaneous flower stalks in their first season in the ground. The flower stalks themselves are deep red and are eye-catching even before the flower buds open.

'Starship' Lobelia prefers well drained soil in full sun but will grow also grow in somewhat shaded areas. They are hardy to zone 5 as long as the soil is well drained enough, in soggy soils the roots can rot over the winter. If you soil is consistently very wet over the winter you can plant your Lobelia in a raised mound of shredded landscape bark mixed with soil to provide adequate drainage.
