Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A basil for pesto lovers that produces leaves all Summer instead of stopping to bloom and set seeds. The flavor is very aromatic with a definite citrus edge. Additionally, the light green foliage with a cream edge is so attractive that you may grow it for its looks alone. A columnar basil growing upright to 2’, its neat habit makes it perfect for small gardens and pots. Plant in fertile garden soil and in full Sun (light afternoon shade OK). Water evenly, fertilize regularly and harvest by pinching out the growing tips to encourage bushy growth. Lucky thing: the snails don’t like it.

Basils are one of the most popular herbs used fresh or dried in a wide variety of dishes. Bushy upright plants have aromatic, shiny foliage in a variety of shapes, colours and flavours. Each year we carry 10-15 different basils. Plant in a warm, well-drained site. Remove flower heads promptly to keep the plant producing foliage. Can be grown indoors on a windowsill. Though enticing, don't grow basils outside until around May 15 as soils and night time temperatures will be too low.
