If you love tropical looking exotics that are reasonably hardy, this baby is for you! Large evergreen shrub or small tree 8-15’ tall and wide eventually; slender-ish pinnate foliage resembles umbrella ribs. Beautiful specimen for the special garden…in warm areas protect from hot PM sun; decent soil, regular moisture; also a splendid indoor plant in colder
This superlative shrub or small tree from Taiwan has gorgeous palmate foliage sometimes held with orange or red pedicels (leaf stems) in winter. Like most members of the aralia family it blooms in fall. Numerous species from Asia are potentially hardy for us including this one. Schefflera taiwaniana has been bone hardy in the Pacific Northwest and BC through the armageddon winters of 2008/09 and 2010/2011.
For those who haven't met a schefflera and those who love any and all scheffleras, S. taiwaniana is a perfect addition to the garden with tall stems topped with deeply cut, round, evergreen leaves. Can eventually reach 15' tall and wide in sun to part shade where it can be watered regularly with special attention in very hot weather. Frost hardy to 0 °F, USDA zone 7, though leaves can be nipped back in the lower teens °F, quickly recovering in warmer temperatures. Happy as a houseplant or outside in containers in zone 8.
